Rotary Club of Santa Fe Welcome Song

FOUR WAY TEST STORY

In Oklahoma, Herb Taylor worked for the Sinclair Oil Company. After a year, he resigned and went into insurance, real estate and oil lease brokerage.

Herb TaylorWith some prosperous years behind him, Herb returned to Chicago, Illinois, in 1925 and began a swift rise within the Jewel Tea Company. He soon joined the Rotary Club of Chicago. In line for the presidency of Jewel in 1932, Herb was asked to help revive the near-bankrupt Club Aluminum Company of Chicago.
The cookware manufacturing company owed $400,000 more than its total assets and was barely staying afloat. Herb responded to the challenge and decided to cast his lot with this troubled firm. He resigned from Jewel Tea, taking an 80 percent pay cut to become president of Club Aluminum. He even invested $6,100 of his own money in the company to give it some operating capital.
It also needed a simple yardstick to keep it going. This was what came to be " The Four Way Test" Herb Taylor was the author.

By 1937, Club Aluminum’s indebtedness was paid off and during the next 15 years, the firm distributed more than $1 million in dividends to its stockholders. Its net worth climbed to more than $2 million.
Herb Taylor transferred the copyright of The Four Way Test to Rotary International when he served as R.I. president in 1954-55, during the organization’s golden anniversary
ROTARY MOTTO
In 1910 in Chicago at the conclusion of the first convention, Arthur Sheldon in a speech said.
"He profits most who serves his fellows best"
Again in a convention next year in Portland he altered the phrase and said.
"He profits most who serves best."
In 1911 Frank Collins at the second convention used the phrase.
"Service, not self."Later changed the official motto in 1950 became
"Service above Self."
Rotary's dual motto: Service above Self He profits most who serves best.

Members participate in over 50 different activities, benefiting the local community and the state. These Rotarians also work in partnership with fellow Rotarians in Mexico for projects benefiting communities on both sides of the border. International student exchanges and youth leadership programs in New Mexico are significant parts of the programming. Club members also support many world-wide Rotary initiatives.
