Public Safety Award

The club selects by committee a recipient, if any, of the annual Public Safety Award, which is intended to recognize individuals from Santa Fe or Northern New Mexico who have risked their lives for the protection of the community. An appropriate plaque or memorial recognizing the recipient is awarded at a regular meeting of the Club. Past Recipients:

2006-7: Stan Mascarenas, retired Deputy Chief of Police, Santa Fe Police Dept

2007-8: Sgt. Gillian Alessio. She’s been with the SFPD for about 10 years and has worked her way up from the Patrol Division to become the Sgt. of the Training and Recruiting Division. Her superior officers all agreed that she was an excellent patrolperson. Her current position involves ensuring that all officers, sworn and non-sworn , receive all the requisite training needed to perform their duties. She also is assigned all the duties associated with recruitment, from background checking all the way to determining fitness for duty.

Everyone who knows Gillian is immediately struck by her gentle yet powerful demeanor, her total dedication to the job, her compassion and her perseverance. She was selected for her prestigious current position because of a variety of factors, including her ability to create positive change in the community and the police force. She is a consummate professional and an amazingly creative problem solver as well as being 100% selfless! Her position is unique as she reports directly to the Chief of Police and interacts with the Mayor, the City Manager and the City Attorney. Gillian was instrumental in getting in a much-needed actual recruiting budget for our police force! So, on top of all her qualities as a cop, she is also someone whom everyone admires and someone who can get along with anyone!

Gillian is a true leader and always models the behavior she wishes her trainees and recruits to display. She is always optimistic, always dedicated to helping wherever she can. She is also one of the most humble people I have yet to meet. Gillian has won many commendations and awards for her work in the field. She is one of those authentic officers whom any survivor of violence would want on their case! She is dedicated to working to end sexual and domestic violence and is always available to speak with those of us in that field to help with any situation.

She said in response to being asked why she was a cop that she loves her work as she can have a tangible effect of making things better…that she is gratified by the opportunity of being able to actually see the changes occurring as a result of her involvement.

Bottom line is that she not only wants to make a difference….she actually does make that difference.
