photo gallery: activities, projects...
July 2004: this is the first group that travelled 21 hours to the heart of the Copper Canyon to help rebuild a school for the Tarahumara Indian children
This is truly one of great benefits of belonging to Rotary. People from all professions coming together, locally and internationally, working together, and building lasting friendships in the process.
We slept in very simple beds in motels (that had the pictures of missing women on the front door), the electricity went out every night because of the monsoons, we drove and talked for hours in cars on winding roads, we tried NOT to get "Montezuma's Revenge" (and some were clearly successful), we had a car swept away by water and couldn't drive it back.....but through it all we just kept moving forward with a sense of accomplishment, adventure, and bonding friendships.

| 6am Santa Fe: Bright and early we start the journey, notice the clean clothes.....things change...... |
After being greeted so warmly by our fellow Rotarians in Chihuahua, we head off to Aboreachi (about 3 hours away), the first NEW MEXICAN license plate arrives at the school. |

|
We were also greeted with a line of locals seeking to be employed for the day or week. |
Some of our fellow Rotarians from Chihuahua, Mexico, Arturo and Miguel - also our navigators. |

| Since the nearest town was an hour away, Tracy, the only girl in this group, uses a technique her grandfather taught her to recycle nails by re-straightening used ones |
What to do next? |

the community's watchful eyes |
we drove to the school everyday in the mountains, through the arroyos |

| and every afternoon it rained |
and we TRIED (some clearly unsuccessful) to travel back 60km to town the same way during monsoons.... |
