- September 17th, Dinner and Flamenco Show at El Farol, 6:30pm, sign up at our regular lunchtime meetings or reserve with Tracy by Sept. 3rd just for fun and fellowship. Great Rotarian discount applies, regular price $60 + 12% gratuity = $72, Rotarian price on Sept. 17th, just $45 + $9 gratuity=$54pp.
- Oct. 3rd, Take the Train, 6-8pm, a Fun Event. Sign up at the regular lunchtime meetings. We will be on the High Desert Highball. Plan to board onto our own car (if we get a bunch more to sign up--- 10 so far) at 5:30. Train runs from 6 to 8. We go out an hour into the desert [ Eldorado ] to see the sunset, scenery and have cocktails. Train leaves from the historic depot [1909] in the Tomisitas parking lot on Guadalupe. Parking is not permitted in their lot . The SFSR only has a couple of spaces, one is handicapped. The cost is $20 pp locals rate. Payment is cash or check to Penn Way NLT 9/25 lunch. Checks are payable to SFSR. Anyone wanting to go after 9/25 can make their own arrangements at the depot [989-8600]. On board will be a cash bar for cocktails, beer, sodas, water,cookies, chips and candy. Passengers may bring food and sodas aboard but NO beer or booze. Passengers will be able to go onto the flatcar at any time.
- Oct. 12-19, District Cruise ( New England and Canada). Keep selling (or buying) your tickets for the New England cruise on Princess Cruise Line October 12-19! Assistant Governors were given more ticket stubs if members need them. It is not necessary to have a complete ticket, merely the stubs for the drawing. You qualify as an EREY if you sell your ten tickets for the cruise. A free cruise for two will be given to the winner, as well as a free cruise for two for the person who sold the winning ticket. What a difference the sale of the cruise tickets made in our annual fund giving to the Foundation last year - over $168,000. This is an excellent way to help build The Rotary Foundation which enables our District the opportunity to increase service in our communities as well as across the world. Make your reservations now to travel and be a part of this great opportunity, the District 5520 Cruise, to see the beautiful Canada/New England “fall foliage”. It is one of the best ways to see the New England coast during this brilliantly colorful time of the year, and a wonderful way to experience the culture and scenic
beauty of Eastern Canada or to visit the birthplace of American liberty. - Guadalajara trip in
November. The hotel where Guadalupe Goler has secured rooms at a discount is the

Directions: At the Scottish Rite Temple turn onto Bishops Lodge Road; go to the first light and turn right onto Artist Road; go up the hill past the Fort Marcy Compound; at the big stone marker on the right saying Estancia Primeria South turn right; the clubhouse is on the left at the bottom of the hill.

ROTARY READS PROGRAM EXPANDING TO THREE SCHOOLS! This is the second year of Rotary Reads, a very successful program now at Pinon and Chaparral elementary schools. Next year a third school will be added, with Rotarians buying books at Collected Works Bookstore, reading them to students, and then donating them to their students' classroom libraries.
In May, as last year, several classes will be rewarded for outstanding efforts in reading: a trip to the bookstore so that each child can choose a book to take home, a duplicate of which will be purchased for that child's classroom library. A Rotary District Simplified Grant has helped fund this for two years, along with contributions from community members. A total of 15 classes, along with lots of parent chaperones, will join in this festive activity, every day for two weeks in May. For the next two years, a generous grant of $10,000 from the McCune Charitable Foundation will allow this program to include another school. We are truly blessed to receive this financial support, and Rotarians are proving themselves once again a blessing in this community as they share the joys of literacy with our students.
